Jewelry Care

Silver and Brass Jewelry

All silver and brass jewelry is subject to oxidation (surface darkening) over time. Oxidation can be minimized with proper care and removed as needed. It is recommended to store jewelry in an air tight container or bag to slow the natural tarnishing process when not wearing. A silver polishing cloth works well on brass, silver and solid gold jewelry. Please note: they are NOT to be used on gold filled or gold plated jewelry as they may remove some of the bonded gold. There are many “at home” remedies available online, a few of my favorites can be found here.

Gold Filled and Gold Vermeil Jewelry

"
Gold Vermeil” or “Heavy Gold Plate” refers a plating process at is 100x thicker than standard gold plating. The difference between the two terms is that vermeil (pronounced “ver-may”) referred to a base metal of sterling silver where as “heavy plating” is used when the base metal is brass. This method of plating is used when a piece is fabricated in a less costly metal to make the piece more affordable to the consumer. Our pieces are sent out of house for this treatment and returned within a months time. We guarantee our gold vermeil/heavy plated pieces for up to three years. If the base metal is visible before this time, we will replate at no additional cost. If replating is needed after this window, there will be a small ($10-$20) fee associated with this service.

Gold Filled is a USA industry standard that requires 5% pure gold by weight. Its is a stricter regulated process that involved pressure bonding multiple layers of gold over a core of high grade jeweler’s brass resulting in a product that is durable, hypoallergenic, and long lasting.

In order to clean your gold filled or gold vermeil pieces take a cup of warm water and mix in a couple drops of mild dishwashing detergent into it. Soak the jewelry in soapy water and allow to air dry. Use a soft microfiber cloth to polish the jewelry, but be gentle. This cleaning method will allow you to enjoy your jewelry for years to come!
